Swedes edge England
– Roger Söderberg witnesses an
evening of majority decisions
Kennedy Katende the Swedish Olympian at light
heavyweight, who spent some time with the Haringay ABC the other
year, secured the host nation´s close victory with a 2 – 1 win
against Obed Mbwakongo.
The Lynn AC boxer was a bit slow to use his
height and reach advantage. Katende stayed out his distance and
then tended the beat the Englishman to the punch in the
exchanges. The was particularly clear in the first round, but as
the bout went on contest evened out.
There were six majority decisions, which is a
general problems in international dual where there are three
judges, giving one nation 2 – 1 in every other bout. Perhaps
there should be neutral judges. But this time you can also
defend the judges, since the bouts generally were very close
and competitive. There was not one single knock down in the nine
contests, subsequently the dual did not offer great drama.
In order to reflect the 2012 London Olympics
which will allow both female and male boxing, the dual in
Stockholm consisted of contests for both genders.
At lightweight Nathasa Jones, Rotunda ABC
scored the only English female when when she won unanimously
against Swedish late substitute Helena Falk. Jones moved well
and used her reach against her hard working Swedish opponent,
who however was less accurate.
The English men scored three wins. At
bantamweight Leigh Wood, Nottingham, won a comfortable victory
against another Swedish sub with a great fighting name –
Muhammad Ali. Sub for Sweden´s bronze medalist in Liverpool 2008
Salomon N´Tuve. Wood landed a sharp left hook early on and
seemed to be in for an early night. But the Swede gritted his
teeth and went the distance.
At featherweight teenage prospect Martin
Ward, Repton edged Sweden´s bronze medalist from Liverpool 2008
Bashir Hassan. It was ill-tempered with Hassan was cautioned
on a couple of occasions for hitting on the break. He would on
and off land his south-paw right cleanly, but could not make
Ward lose his composure. Ward boxed confidently and landed
repeated with his one-twos.
At lightweight Tom Stalker, St Aloysius was a
bit too laid back for own, but was close decision against
Redouane Kaya. Stalker had the speed and the reach, but tended
not to work more than he had to and consequently allowed the
determined Swede back into contest. Kaya often did the better
work at infighting.
At flyweight Sharon Holford, Aspire ABC
chased merited Swedish opponent Jenny Harding, the 2009 European
champion, but seldom got close. Hardings used her legs and a
high guard and some stiff counters. Few punches were anded.
There was another Swedish victory also in the
second female flyweight contest. Aggressive Shipra Nilsson
varied her boxing somewhat more than Lucy o´ Connor, Royal Navy.
At welterweight Fred Evans of Wales (but with
the England team) lacked strength against Leon Chartoi, who
represented Sweden in the World Championships in Italy in 2009.
But it was another close one.
At middleweight Frank Buglioni, Repton
probably had the most demanding task when he faced Swedish
Olympian and 2009 Golden Gloves Champion Naim Terbunja. But the
mobile and well schooled Buglioni did well in defeat.
Terbunja was slow to get started. He
concentrated on his power punches, which allowed Buglioni to use
some good old noble art of boxing. In the end Terbunja’s power
paid off, but Buglioni was not far behind.
The dual was held at Eriksdalshallen,
Stockholm on a really snowy Swedish winter evening. It was a
good move by the Swedish Boxing Federation to return this
classic boxing arena, instead of hiding their events at various
less public venues.
