COPENHAGEN – Sweden’ s Anders Eklund regained the European
heavyweight title when he knocked out veteran champion Alfredo
Evangelista of Spain.
The towering 239-pound Eklund won five of the first six
rounds when Evangelista, 228, tried to rally in round seven. But
Evangelista´s attack also meant the end for him as Eklund
suddenly stopped him in his tracks with a terrific right hand.
Evangelista, who challenged Muhammad Ali for the world title
in 1977, was caught on the ropes and taking a beating when
referee Henk Meyers of Holland got in between the two and
started to count. The delayed effect of the punches got to
Evangelist, who fell heavily and was unable to rise for two
minutes.
The 29-year-old Eklund improved his record to 16-3-1
European lightweight champion Gert Bo Jacobsen of Denmark won
the newly established WBC junior lightweight title for boxers
not ranked among the top ten, stopping Colombia´s Felipe Julio
in 5. Julio, based in Florida, was a substitute for Canadian
champion Remo DiCarlo.
Jacobsen, 135, methodically outboxed Julio 132 ½, flooring
him in round 4 and cutting him in the next session. The cut
provided a good excuse for Italian referee Giuseppe Ferrari to
take Julio out of the fight.
Jacobsen remained perfect at 21 – 0.
An eight-rounder saw Danish based Turk Eyup Can win a close
but unanimous decision over French Flyweight champion Alain
Limarola. Each weighed 118.
Denmark´s Racheed Lawal, 134 ½, dominated most of his fight
against French lightweight champion Jose Maillot, 136, to win
unaniomous eight-round decision.
Norway´s Magne Havnaa, 195, stopped England´s Stewart Lithgow,
187 ½, in 5, three standing counts in the final round forcing
the invention.
Denmark´s Lars Lund Jensen, 128 ½, took a close but unanimous
six-round decision over France´s Farid Benderjeb, 129.
