Darren Sutherland Dazzles In Sparring Before Dublin Debut

Photos of Darren Sutherland ©Jane Warburton/MMG

Irish Olympic hero Darren Sutherland held a media workout in London and produced a startling display of skills in sparring with rugged undefeated light heavyweight Carl Dilks in round after round of furious action.

Sutherland showed fine form against his quality sparring partner and is on target to produce a superb professional debut, which takes place on a big Frank Maloney Promotions bill in Dublin, Ireland on Thursday, December 18.

At Beijing, the 26 year old won the 2008 Olympic Bronze Medallist at middleweight by stopping Algeria's Nabil Kassel and outpointing Venezuela's Alfonso Blanco before losing to Gold Medal winner James DeGale of Britain, a fighter Sutherland had previously defeated four times.

Now campaigning as a super middleweight, Sutherland makes his maiden voyage as a pro against Bulgaria's Georgi Iliev over six rounds at The Helix, located at the Irishman's alma mater, Dublin City University.

Sutherland will share top of the bill with European super bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe, who defends his continental strap against Italian titlist Fabricio Trotta.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents "Out To Conquer The World" headlined by the debut of Irish Olympic Bronze Medallist Darren Sutherland and European Super Bantamweight Champion Rendall Munroe's title defense against Italian Champion Fabricio Trotta along with full undercard support, on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at The Helix in Dublin, Ireland.

Power Back In Action On Maloney's Dublin Venture

Eager to regain his former standing as the top bantamweight in Britain following a 13 month hiatus, Martin Power returns to the ring on the big boxing bill at The Helix at City University in Dublin, Ireland on Thursday, December 18, 2008.

Power streaked to the top during the first phase of his career, making the most of a five year run by winning the British title and holding it through two defenses while turning back such difficult opposition as Ian Napa, Dale Robinson, Isaac Ward, Rocky Dean and Shinny Bayaar.

But the 28 year old Londoner ran into a very large roadblock in the towering form of the nearly 6 foot tall undefeated South African bantam Tshifhiwa Munyai in June, 2006 as the pair tangled for the vacant Commonwealth title.

Although Power was ahead on two scorecards after eight frames, the long reach and accurate combination punching of late replacement Munyai had taken it's toll by the ninth as the British champion was stopped midway through the round.

A return bout with Munyai proved even more fruitless as the giant South African was on the form of his life, slashing through Power's defenses to convince Team Power to pull their man out in the fourth.

Despite putting in an excellent performance during a rematch with Ian Napa in November of last year, Power failed to lift his old British title but did succeed in proving that he was far from finished and ready to rebound given more measured steps of opposition.

That comeback begins on Thursday, December 18 when Power, 19-3 (8), encounters 26 year old Liverpool area super bantamweight Gary Davies, 7-2-1 (5), in a scheduled six round bout.

Davies is a former British masters/central area super bantam titlist who has only lost one of his last nine contests. Three of Davies' last four opponents have not gone the distance and the St. Helens man is determined to make a name for himself by drawing his smaller adversary into a slugfest that he believes Power cannot win.

But win Power must if he is to realize his ambitions toward the British and Commonwealth titles and the contest with Davies has a very good chance of being the fight of the night on a very competitive bill at The Helix in Dublin.

The card is headlined by the pro debut of 2008 Irish Olympic Bronze Medallist Darren Sutherland, who meets Hungary's Georgi Iliev, and European super bantam champion Rendall Munroe's title defense against Italy's Fabricio Trotta.

Two Commonwealth title fights are also on tap as welterweight champ Craig Watson meets Adan Amar and bantamweight kingpin Jason Booth confronts challenger Sean Hughes.

Former British and Commonwealth light middleweight champion Jamie Moore, currently the Irish titlist, will place his three year, ten bout win streak on line as he tunes up for an upcoming European title clash while ex-European super bantamweight boss Kiko Martinez, undefeated Cork based super middle prospect Gary O'Sullivan and popular Dublin super bantam Paul Hyland are all scheduled to fight on the bill.

***Larsen to fight Cocco on Valuev-Holyfield undercard***

(Picture SE)

Mads Larsen is looking for his 51st win in his 53rd fight when he takes
on Italy´s Roberto Cocco in Zurich on December 20. The Golden Boy knows
that a good performance will keep alive his chances of fighting for the
world title soon. It would be his second world title fight after
dropping a close – and controversial – points decision against then-WBA
and IBF super middleweight champion Sven Ottke back in September 2003.
Sauerland Event managing director Chris Meyer confirmed he has been in
negotiations with IBF champion Lucian Bute to set up a title clash for
the 35-year-old Dane, but a final deal has yet to be reached. Therefore
it is crucial for Larsen to stay in shape, and in order to do so, he
will step into the ring against Cocco.

A win is a must for the man who finds himself in the top 15 in the WBA,
WBC and IBF rankings. That is why Larsen has prepared harder than ever
before in Berlin´s famous Max-Schmeling Gym under the guidance of Ulli
Wegner. “Prior to my last fight in March I worked out in Denmark on my
own,” he said. “But it is better to have the coach around. The
preparation is harder and you are more disciplined. In the fight against
Ross Thompson I noticed that the preparation makes a difference. It is
good to be in the gym and have the other guys around – it is a lot of
fun to work out with them.”

Larsen stressed that his motivation to become world champion is bigger
than ever before. His nine-month ring break was due to family reasons.
“I love boxing,” he said. “The most important thing for me is to
perform. I can best do that if everything around me is fine and there is
a balance. Unfortunately, my mother was sick and I wanted to be close to
her, so I took the time and waited until she felt better. That does not
mean that boxing is not the most important thing in my life, though.
Much on the contrary – it has always been my ambition to win the world
title. That has not changed.”

Watson, Amar Set For Commonwealth Clash In Dublin

Photo of Craig Watson ©Curtis McCormick/MMG

In one of the most anticipated welterweight contests on the European boxing scene, Craig Watson and Adnan Amar are set to clash on a massive fight card, held on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at The Helix, located on the campus of Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland.

The pair collide as chief support to Rendall Munroe's European super bantamweight title defense against granite-jawed Italian champion Fabrizio Trotta.

Watson, 13-2 (4), puts his Commonwealth title at risk against top challenger Adnan Amar, 22-1 (6), but much more is at stake in this crucial crossroads battle for both men.

25 year old Amar has been moving through the ranks since turning pro in 2001 but kicked his career into overdrive over the past year, winning four bouts and capturing the English and Midlands Area welterweight titles.

The Nottingham stylist has been most impressive during that streak, gaining three of the six knockouts on his record including a third round stoppage of Canadian middleweight Ian Mackillop.

But Amar will be stepping up to a higher level of competition when he faces Craig Watson, the steel-tough Manchester battler who punched his way into the headlines as an amateur by flooring celebrated rival Amir Khan.

Watson, also 25 years of age, has been thrown into the deep end on more than once occasion since joining the paid ranks just over three and a half years ago but the experience has helped the southpaw develop a bruising, take no prisoners approach that has proven difficult to overcome.

A win over previously undefeated prospect Michael Lomax in July, 2007 was a breakthrough for Watson but it was his shattering upset of heavily favored Ali Nuumbembe a year ago that brought the Mancunian the coveted Commonwealth crown.

After failing in a bid for the European Union belt against highly skilled Italian Daniele Pettruci in Rome, Watson got back on the horse in May with a superb performance against Matthew Hatton to retain the Commonwealth title for the first time

The Commonwealth prize will be up for grabs when the bell rings in Dublin on December 18, but Watson and Amar will also be vying to move up the Continental ladder as the winner will be within striking distance of a top ten post in the European ratings.

Spirits are running high between the two opposing camps and each fighter will carry into the conflict the hopes and dreams of their dedicated followings, ensuring a matchup to remember and a worthy chief support contest to the main event.

ARENA-FREE FISCHER READY TO BE “THE OX” AGAIN!

The decision by Hamburg-based Arena Box-Promotion to pull out of a promotional agreement for a fight against Steffen Kretzschmann has done nothing but spur on a positive-minded Willi ‘The Ox’ Fischer as he prepares to continue his comeback on the Klitschko vs Rahman undercard, Dec. 13 in Mannheim, Germany. The 36-year-old Fischer, 35-6-1 (22 KO’s), will face off with Latvian champion Edgar Kalnars, 18-15 (9 KO’s), over eight scheduled rounds and seems primed for a TV slot on televising channel RTL, depending on how the ‘world’ heavyweight title fight is going.

Earlier, Arena Box-Promotion had informed Fischer’s manager Olaf Schroeder of Fight Production that it wishes to pull out of a contract which guaranteed the Frankfurt heavyweight a high-profile fight with unbeaten fellow-German Steffen Kretzschmann, 13-0 (12 KO’s). Schroeder commented: “Arena cited a lack of funds as a reason, but I don’t really buy that. Maybe they just realized Kretzschmann is still too green to handle an experienced pro like Willi?”. Fight Production confirmed that both companies lawyers are currently working on a cancellation agreement.

On the plus side of things is obviously the fact that the former WBO ‘world’ title challenger is now free to choose his options – and they are likely to increase with a convincing performance on the huge bill in Mannheim. Fischer has prepared diligently under trainer Tom Leidenheimer and his team, sparring many rounds with ex-world champion Riddick Bowe (who starts his own comeback on the same show), and also took a trip to Berlin for some sparrings with the top heavies of Sauerland Event. “Everything, just everything, is going right at the moment,” beams Leidenheimer, “Willi is in the best shape since we started this comeback three fights ago, mentally and physically, and he impresses me a lot in training. We are as ready as we can be to show to a big audience that Willi Fischer is again to be reckoned with!”.

PRESS RELEASE  NORRKÖPING

Cliff ”Bazooka” Soukka boxar i Himmelstalund!

Här möts alltså två obesegrade boxare i lätt mellanvikt.

FISCHER SPARS BOWE, FIGHTS ON KLITSCHKO CARD

Manager Olaf Schroeder today officially confirmed reports by HR television that Fight Production’s only current German boxer, comebacking heavyweight Willi ‘De Ox’ Fischer, will finally take the next step with an appearance on the Klitschko vs Rahman ‘world’ heavyweight title undercard on December 13. Fischer, 35-6-1 (22 KO’s) and from Frankfurt, will bring many of his fans to near-by Mannheim, where K2 (the Klitschko brothers promotional company) stage the show at the SAP-Arena. While the opponent, whom Fight Production expects to announce later this week, should be a test (“We can only keep Willi interested when he feels the opponent poses some threat,” says trainer Tom Leidenheimer), he certainly won’t be as prolific as the 36-year-old Fischer’s training partner, who is none other than former undisputed world heavyweight champion Riddick ‘Big Daddy’ Bowe!

Bowe is currently training in Germany with the goal of himself getting back in the ring on the same show as Fischer – and according to Fischer’s trainer in decent shape! The American has already passed all medicals of the German Federation and his sparring sessions with Fischer are “a treat to watch,” said Leidenheimer, “and Willi is really profiting from it, what with all those moves and experience that Bowe brings. These are the best sparrings ever since I started training with Willi and the comeback with Fight Production.”.

Fischer’s fight will be scheduled for eight rounds – and should be the final step before some title opportunity, or at least a very meaningful outing. Manager Schroeder explains: “Willi needs and wants challenges, make-or-break fights. There’s no point in re-building for another year or so, we need to go for our goals now quickly and if we lose, we lose, but the whole purpose of Willi’s comeback was to try for the top and that’s what we intend.”

Explosive Thin Men: Bell vs. Haskins For British Title

Andy Bell photo ©Jane Warburton/MMG

Frank Maloney Promotions returns to the north of England on Friday, November 7 when Andy Bell puts his British super flyweight championship at risk against veteran southpaw Lee Haskins at the Robin Park Centre in the Manchester suburb of Wigan.

23 year old Nottingham man Bell clawed his way to the forefront of the UK super flyweight division by overcoming Chris Edwards in a thrilling slugfest that shattered the gritty Stoke grafter's hold on the British title this past March.

To keep hold of his prized possession and seven fight win streak, Bell, 11-3 (3), must hold off cagey left hander Lee Haskins as the Bristol based blazer has vowed to return to the lighter weight ranks and recapture the glory of his reign as Commonwealth flyweight champion.

Haskins, 17-2 (9), has never lost a fight waged below the bantamweight division and the 24 year old's hands down, punches from all angles style should produce a fiery display when pitted against the high volume attack of Bell.

Chief support at Robin Park Centre is provided by the first title defense of English super bantam titlist Mark Moran, 10-0-1 (3), of Liverpool who faces the challenge of former European, British and Commonwealth champion Esham Pickering, 33-7 (13), of Newark.

Manchester welterweight Mark Thompson, 17-1 (10), meets hardened Scotsman Andrew Ferrans, 24-8-2 (8), of New Cummock in an eight rounder while the Harrow flash, Akaash Bhatia, 12-0 (3), steps up against former English super bantam titlist Marc Callaghan, 19-14-1 (4), of Barking over the same distance at featherweight.

A trio of six rounders are also on the bill as light middle stylist Thomas McDonagh, 32-1-3 (6), of Manchester swaps punches with Lincoln based multi-weight scrapper Michael Monaghan, 17-23 (2), St. Helens middleweight Martin Murray, 9-0 (3), takes on Liverpool slugger Graham Delehedy, 9-4-1 (7), while another scouser, super middle Tony Quigley, 11-1 (4), of Liverpool trades leather with towering Welshman Nathan King, 12-11 (1), of Mountain Ash.

In four round action, cruiserweight John Lewis Dickinson of Newcastle meets seasoned centurion Paul Bonson of Featherstone while Manchester lightweight Karl Place and Liverpool bantamweight Paul Edwards are also scheduled to appear in separate bouts.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents "The Explosive Thin Men", featuring Andy Bell vs. Lee Haskins for the Super Flyweight Championship of Britain, supported by full undercard, at Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England on Friday, November 7, 2008.

Tickets are priced at £70 and £30 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508.

Promotorerna Sören Niklasson & George Scott siktar stort.

Q: Danilo, you have arrived and already worked out in Oldenburg. How is
everything?

DH: “Thanks, everything is fine. I am in great shape and will work with
my coach Manfred Wolke to keep up the good form until Saturday. I can´t
wait to step into the ring.”

Q: But your opponent, the “Viking Warrior” Mikkel Kessler, seems to be
very confident…

DH: “Yes – he is the world champion, he is the favourite. But he is not
unbeatable.”

Q: It would be fair to say that Danish fighters have played a special
role in your career…

DH: “That´s true. I suffered the first defeat of my career in the
European title fight against Mads Larsen in 2003. One year later his
countryman Rudy Markussen also beat me. That was a tough fight during
which I lacked concentration for a very brief moment near the end. Now
I´ve got the third Dane coming up. What is it that they say? The best
things come in threes.”

Q: Are you bothered by the fact that many people consider you the
underdog? A big German tabloid even titled: Mr Haussler, are you tired
of life?

DH: “I don´t care at all. Of course Mikkel Kessler – just like Joe
Calzaghe – has dominated the super-middleweight division in the last
couple of years. But if there is one thing that could be learned from
the Calzaghe fight then it is that Kessler is vulnerable, too. I have
been a professional boxer for over 11 years, I have a lot of experience.
I have never been stopped before – and this won´t be any different
against Kessler.”

Q: Your former stablemate Markus Beyer certainly had similar plans but
was knocked out by Kessler in the third round. Are you still in touch
with him?

DH: “Yes, we speak over the phone from time to time. But he did not give
me any suggestions for the Kessler fight. I saw their duel live in
Copenhagen in the stadium. I am well aware of Mikkel´s strengths and
know how I can and how I cannot box against him. Together with my coach,
I have developed a special strategy. Of course, I cannot go in details now.”

Q: You have been a professional for a long time. In 2001, you were the
European champion. Why is it that you had to turn 33 to get a world
title shot?

DH: “Over the years I have worked hard for a world title fight. That is
the challenge I have been waiting for all my life. I came close a couple
of times. Four, five years ago I did not get the chance because
Sauerland Event had two champions in Markus Beyer and Sven Ottke. After
that, world title fights were discussed but nobody of the defending
champions fought me. But that is all in the past now.”

Q: Have you ever thought about retirement?

DH: “That is something a fighter of my age should do. A couple of weeks
ago I started an apprenticeship at a big German insurance company. My
future is safe – with or without boxing. That gives me a lot of power
and calmness. My wife and my son Matti are also doing well – my family
is very important to me. Everything´s great in my life at the time being
– no need to worry. The chance to fight for the world title comes
exactly at the right time.”

Q: Danilo, thank you very much for your time and best of luck for Saturday.

Belgian Butcher Relishes Napa Clash

Ian Napa photo ©Jane Warburton/MMG

London's York Hall has long been recognized as the spiritual home of British boxing and the historic venue also draws some of the most ferociously partisan fans to be found anywhere. It is into this cauldron that European bantamweight champion Carmelo "The Belgian Butcher" Ballone will place himself on Friday, October 17, 2008 when he faces local hero and British champion, Ian Napa.

But the seasoned 32 year old Continental rides a massive wave of confidence having knocked out six straight victims and Team Ballone has left no stone unturned in it's quest to prepare their man for this most difficult assignment, as the champion has been sparring the best fighters that neighboring France has to offer.

Ballone has fought the toughest bouts of his career on foreign soil and his manager Toni Buscemi has no illusions of just what dangers lie await in London.

"On October 17, Carmelo will be confronted with his clone," Buscemi told Belgian newspaper Lanouvelle Gazette. "The Englishman Ian Napa is what I describe as a joker; the king of feints and evasion who can conceal his shots until the last moment.

"My only fear of fighting Napa is losing a decision. The venue will be red-hot but I hope the judges will succeed in keeping cool heads but of course, ideally Carmelo finishes the fight without having it go to a points decision."

Ballone, 21-2-1 (10), will be making the second defense of the European title won by stopping previously undefeated Eugen Sorin Tanasie last December and has vowed to follow in the footsteps of fellow Belgian and European bantamweight champion Jean Pierre Cossemyns, who defeated future world featherweight champion Hogan "Kid" Bassey in his first trip to the UK in the autumn of 1952.

Napa, 17-6 (1), has won four straight, including three defenses of the British bantamweight title, since dropping a close contest of previous European kingpin Simone Maludrottu last March and the 30 year old Hackney man is banking on a world title shot should he succeed in ripping the belt from Ballone.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents "Dapa Napa", Ian Napa vs. Carmelo Ballone for the Bantamweight Championship of Europe at York Hall, London, England on Friday, October 17, 2008.

Tickets are priced at £75 and £35 and are available by logging onto

Maloney Goes Massive With Big London Show

Ian Napa photo ©Jane Warburton/MMG

Frank Maloney returns to the capital city in a big way when the South London based promoter puts on a thrilling fight card at historic York Hall in Bethnal Green, headlined by Ian Napa's exciting challenge of European bantamweight champion Carmelo Ballone on Friday, October 17, 2008.

The UK's most skillful boxer, Napa, 17-6 (1), won the British title last year and his three scintillating defenses of the domestic crown have led the 5'1 dynamo to a second crack at the European trophy but in order to claim Continental glory, the flashy 30 year old must surmount a difficult opponent.

After cleaning out the bantamweight division in his native Belgium, 32 year old Ballone, 21-2 (10), proved his pugilistic acumen on a wider playing field by capturing the European Union belt against Spanish bomb thrower Ivan Pozo in 2003, which led to a close and controversial split decision loss to European kingpin Simone Maludrottu in the champion's home country of Italy two years later.

Ballone got another opportunity at European honors and made the best of it by stopping Romanian spoiler Eugen Sorin Tanasie in 2007 to claim the vacant title. In May, Ballone crushed the challenge of Valery Yanchy, extinguishing the Belarus titlist in the tenth round.

Can Ballone enter the lion's den of York Hall and emerge still in possession of the European bantamweight title? Ian Napa and a packed house of rabid supporters say not and have thrown forth the challenge to the hard as nails Belgian in what could turn out to be the fight of the year in England.

Maloney has stacked the undercard with typically competitive matchmaking and chief support on October 17 will be provided by the do or die battle of former British and Commonwealth lightweight champion Graham Earl, 25-3 (12), against ruthlessly efficient contender Henry Castle, 18-4 (10), who has stopped five of his last seven victims and has vowed to end the career of Earl as part of his quest to rule over the United Kingdom's lightweight scene.

One of the top light welterweights on the planet, Commonwealth champion Ajose Olusegun, 24-0 (12), will also feature on the card as the Londoner stays busy in hopes of turning his #3 WBC position into a world title shot.

Red-hot undefeated featherweight prospect Akaash Bhatia, 12-0 (3), makes an appearance on the bill as does bruising welterweight Mark Thompson, 16-1 (10), and outstanding light middle hopeful Sam Webb, 11-1-1 (3), will meet former Commonwealth welter title challenger Gilbert Eastman, 20-6 (13).

A handful of Maloney's top prospects round out the lineup as lightweight Liam Shinkwin, 1-0 (0), joins heavyweights Tom Dallas, 1-0 (0), and Larry "War Machine" Olubamiwo, who makes his professional debut.

KOVACS SETS OUT TO PROVE HE’S WORLD CLASS

Shunned by the European Boxing Union (EBU) (see)http://www.fightproduction.com/articles/article232.htm), despite being considered a top-ranked superwelterweight by all independent computer ratings, Hungarian class-act Attila ‘The Viper’ Kovacs, 24-1 (17 KO’s), has now set out to prove he’s world class when he dares to face Armenian Gennady Martirosyan, 13-1 (4 KO’s), in the unfriendly confines of Vyborg, Russia on October 4.

Martirosyan lives in near-by St. Petersburg and just like with Kovacs, his sole professional loss came so early in his career, that it can be considered meaningless by now. Kovacs, in fact, is unbeaten in six years. The 34-year-old Hungarian from Györ had signed with Fight Production late last year and was kept active in low-profile fights in cooperation with Profibox Promotion, the promotional outfit of Hungarian heavyweight champion and Fight Production partner Zoltan Petranyi. “I’m impressed how patiently Attila has waited for this chance,” said German manager Olaf Schroeder, “like a true professional he just went on with it and when we proposed Martirosyan, Attila just said ‘Bring him on!’ without even asking about the money. I believe he has too much all-around for Martirosyan to handle.”

Experience indeed seems Kovacs’ biggest asset when he travels to Russia. Whereas Martirosyan has yet to feature in his first fight for a title, ‘The Viper’ is a veteran of six (all victorious!) championship bouts of sorts. Interestingly, the Armenian’s last outing, in July, saw him win an 8-round decision over Brit Steve Conway – the same man Kovacs outpointed over 12 rounds for the IBO ‘world’ title two years earlier. Sandwiched in between those defeats were two further losses for Conway: Prospect Grzegorz Proksa gained a 6-round verdict and Christophe Canclaux stopped him in three, so Conway clearly wasn’t the same man when he faced Martirosyan. Kovacs’ biggest-name victim probably was former European champion Mamadou Thiam, whom he stopped in seven exciting rounds in 2005.

The clash is scheduled for 10 rounds, with both fighters allowed to come in on the middleweight limit, so neither should have to suffer making weight. In a refreshing back-to-old-times style, Kovacs vs Martirosyan shares top billing with another 10-rounder which sees Ali Ismailov taking on American Max Alexander.

"Stars of the Future" Sparkle In York Hall Debut

Scott Belshaw, Frank Maloney photo ©Jane Warburton/MMG

Saturday night's "Stars of the Future" fight card at London's York Hall was a resounding victory for Frank Maloney as the promoter presided over the successful christening of four prospects from his stable.

The highlights of the evening were heavyweight Tom Dallas and lightweight counterpart Liam Shinkwin, both of whom showed up to their respective professional debuts with large, vocal audiences in tow.

"I thought Dallas looked very impressive in his victory over an experienced Slovakian operator, and he made his fans in the hall very happy" said Maloney of the heavyweight's four round points win over Vlado Szabo.

"Shinkwin is another fighter with large, dedicated support and he kept the crowd on their toes, having opponent Robin Deakin on the floor in the first round before getting the win. He certainly looks like one to watch as he progresses up the ranks."

While not yet possessing the fanbase of Dallas or Shinkwin, the other debutantes provided the fireworks of the evening and earned good marks from their promoter. Light welter Vinny Woolford stopped Gavin Deacon in the second, as did light middle Tomas Grublys against Nick Corret.

"Woolford is the brother of one of my welterweights, Scott Woolford, and proved to be a good addition to that fighting family," said Maloney. "Grublys is from Lithuania but based locally and he showed me that he likes to come and have a fight. If he can get regular work here, he could become a favorite with the London fight crowd."

There were also veterans on the show with light welter Gavin Tait winning a solid points decision over Baz Carey after coming in four pounds over the weight limit, a transgression which caused him to cede a portion of his purse to Carey, while former Commonwealth Games silver medallist Michael Frontin forced a four round draw against the more experienced Ryan Barrett at welterweight.

Maloney was satisfied with the size of the crowd for his first off-TV fight card of the year but was less than happy with big punching Irish heavyweight Scott Belshaw, who topped the bill by outpointing Pavol Polakovic over eight rounds.

"Scott looks the part and physically, he's got everything he needs to succeed but he hasn't got the right attitude; the ring is not a place for gentle giants," said Maloney. "The best thing I can say about his fight is that he won the decision but he must be honest with himself as only he can answer the question of whether or not he has the heart and determination to go with his physique."

Maloney will be returning to York Hall in November for another off-TV show but first will pack out the spiritual home of British boxing on Friday, October 17, 2008 when British bantamweight champion Ian Napa, who made an appearance in York Hall on Saturday to thunderous applause, will try to knock off European ruler Carmelo Ballone on Sky Sports.

Chief support features British super flyweight champion Andy Bell defending against Lee Haskins and Tony Oakey facing Courtney Fry for the vacant English light heavyweight title.

Tickets to "Dapa Napa" are priced at £75 and £35 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508.

Stars Of The Future To Shine In London

Scott Belshaw photo ©Jane Warburton/MMG

While such instantly recognizable names as Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton continue to pack out arenas around the world, these luminaries of boxing were once just pinpoints of light among a dense field of strivers, all trying to fight their way to the top.

It's the entry level of boxing that will provide the sport with tomorrow's headliners and it's no secret that some of the most competitive bouts in the game take place within this tumultuous tangle of ambition.

The scene in Britain today features a healthy crop of young talent and there is perhaps no one better in the UK at picking the cream of the crop than promoter Frank Maloney, who presents an impressive assemblage of up and coming boxers this weekend as London's famed York Hall hosts "Stars of the Future" on Saturday night, September 13, 2008.

Knockouts are the lifeblood of boxing and there is no other underclassman in the heavyweight division with a bigger punch than the towering Irishman, Scott Belshaw. The Belfast Bomber has stopped all but two of his nine victims to date and the 6 foot 7 inch tall 23 year old will be in no mood for mercy when he trades leather at York Hall on Saturday with Czech traveler Pavol Polakovic to top the bill.

Having shared the ring with such big hitters as Herbie Hide, Mark Hobson and Roman Kracik, Polakovic declared that he has nothing to fear from Belshaw and has defiantly vowed to snuff out the gargantuan slugger's promise.

Making their pro debuts on the "Stars of the Future" fight card will be a quartet of hot prospects scheduled to compete in four round bouts.

Heavyweight Tom Dallas is a former junior ABA champion who was runner up in the ABA super heavyweight finals and the 6 foot 6 inch tall man from Chatham is straining to be let off the leash but he'll have to scrap with an iron-chinned Slovakian veteran, Vlado Szabo, before he can post his first professional victory.

The latest in a long line of fighting Shinkwins of Watford, Liam Shinkwin, will swap punches with durable Crawley lightweight Robin Deakin, who floored Vinny Mitchell in January of this year and just narrowly missed knocking off the highly touted Londoner.

Another young man with boxing in the family, Vinnie Woolford of Margate, will make his maiden voyage in the paid ranks when he meets hard-nosed Northampton grafter Gavin Deacon.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents "Stars of the Future", featuring heavyweight Scott Belshaw, at York Hall in London, England on Saturday, September 13, 2008.

Tickets are priced at £50 and £30 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!
Richel Back To Rocky II For Fine-Tuning!

Photo (by Marianne Müller): Concentration at work with
Richel Hersisia and Ralf Rocchigiani.

Since the last week, Dutch heavyweight banger Richel Hersisia has started the fine tuning for his main event clash with ex-WBO champ “Merciless” Ray Mercer, 35-7-1 (26 KO’s), on Pugnus Promotion’s big Karlstad,Sweden bill on September 5 by re-joining trainer Ralf Rocchigiani (himself a former WBO champ, but at cruiser) in Berlin.

Hersisia, 30-2 (24 KO’s), had started out camp in Duisburg, Germany with Ralf’s younger brother, and fellow ex-‘world’ champion, Graciano Rocchigiani, but wanted to spend the last three weeks with Ralf – called Rocky II in the German media, because he won his ‘world’ title after Graciano – in Berlin.

“Ralf knows me a little more intimately, because we worked very well and closely for my last two fights, so I forgot about spending the weekends home in favour of staying near to him,” reasoned the ‘Dutch Sonny Liston’, “I know this fight with Mercer is too important for me to take it easy.” Rocchigiani was pleased after the first few sessions, saying “Richel came very fit and he’s very determined. We just work on some little things now and get him mentally ready.”

The now 47-year-old Mercer, who gave up the WBO title in 1992 after winning it from Francesco Damiani and defending once against Tommy Morrison, certainly has fond memories of Europe, and in fact Scandinavia. In 2001, Mercer appeared in Denmark to knock out Brian Scott in two rounds and as recently as last September 2007, he needed just one round to smash Swedish hometown hero Mikael Lindblad to the canvas. Before the fight, Lindblad had sparred with Hersisia… Now the Dutchman can take revange for his former gym mate in the very same arena in Karlstad in a fight that promoter Anders Holmberg of Pugnus described as “the biggest fight in Sweden in the last 40 years”.

The 34-year-old Hersisia is coming off a one-year’s layoff, but is a clean and healthy liver even outside gym hours. Before stopping Brazilian champ Marcos Celestino in one round last September for the WBF Intercontinental belt, Hersisia had the highlight fight of his career, a give-and-take battle with world-ranked Taras Bidenko, which ended in a hotly disputed points defeat. This constitutes the only loss for the Dutch and Benelux champion in the last four years!

Explaining the inactivity, manager Olaf Schroeder of Fight Production says: “We had a lot of fights simply falling thru after Bidenko. That fight with Bidenko, I believe, opened a lot of people’s eyes about Richel. The ‘establishment’ could barely avoid him beating Bidenko and consequently we were shut out a bit. I was in talks about many fights against well-known opponents, but sooner or later it always was ‘No, thanks, but we changed our mind about fighting Hersisia’.” A fight, so much is for sure, is something a certain Raymond Mercer, despite his age, won’t shy away from.

D.P.B.F. suspends Larsens license until he pays up!

Statement by Evans Ashira Oure: August 8, 2008.

On August 4th 2008 Danish professional Boxing Federation (DPBF) had a meeting where my problems with promoter Robert Larsen were discussed. Larsen still owes me money for my fight on April 19 against Mamadou Thiam.

On August 5, D.P.B.F. President Jesper D. Jensen informed me that they had suspended the license of Larsen until he has paid what he owes me.

Larsen has been lying to everybody, playing a big-shot, which he is not, and hasn't been able to raise the money he owes me. He has several times, in writing, admitted he owes me money, and he even offered to pay me black (untaxed) money, but he has kept pulling the amount down until he didn't want to pay me anything at all.

I think that for once the D.P.B.F has come through at the right time and done something good for a boxer, because even after a court-case he won't be able to raise the money he owes me. Now things are more evened out: I don't have my money, but he doesn't have a license either. Now he cant do something like this to other fighters who listen to his fat mouth, full of bull shit and speaking about all the things he can do.

I want to thank the D.P.B.F. for being there for me as a fighter, and maybe Larsen will pay me my money when he gets paid by the company he claims  bought his business, or when he gets money from the TV contract he is telling people about.

I will make sure Larsen pays me sooner or later, I will never work free for someone like him!

My only hope is that the D.P.B.F. didn't just tell me what I wanted to hear, and that his license is suspended for real!

HERSISIA AND FISCHER AT ROCKY’S NEW GYM

Both of Fight Production’s heavyweight stars Richel Hersisia and Willi Fischer today opened training camp at the brandnew “Rocky’s Gym” of former two-time ‘world’ champion Graciano Rocchgiani in Duisburg, Germany. Although the new training premesis of German fight idol Rocchigiani will officially be opened only in a few weeks time for the public, manager Olaf Schroeder’s heavyweights had their first training session today, as big opportunities are looming.

For the 34-year-old ‘Dutch Sonny Liston’ Hersisia, 30-2 (24 KO’s) it is a September 5 meeting with former WBO ‘world’ champion Ray Mercer, 35-7-1 (26 KO’s) – easily the best name that the former WBF and current Dutch & Benelux champion has crossed swords with. Since the fight is in Sweden, where professional boxing is only allowed under more stringent rules, the two punchers will clash over six two-minute rounds only. Hersisia vs Mercer headlines Pugnus Boxing’s show in Karlstad and five weeks later, Hersisia is due to return home for the first time since 2005 and box the main event on the Ben Bril Memorial promotion on Oct. 13 in Amsterdam, Holland. “We have realistic hopes, if Richel wins both times, to land a big fight before the year is out,” claims manager Schroeder. For the Mercer fight, Hersisia will work full-time with Graciano Rocchigiani, because brother Ralf (himself also a former ‘world’ title holder) can not leave Berlin due to an earlier commitment to train Thomas Ulrich.

As for Willi Fischer, the ex-WBO title challenger, from Frankfurt, the 35-year-old is still waiting for Arena Box Promotion to announce the date for the biggest outing of his so-far successful comeback – which took his overall record to 35-6-1 (22 KO’s) – against compatriot Steffen Kretschmann, 11-0 (10 KO’s). Since Hamburg-based Arena Box Promotion left the German Federation BDB, Kretschmann’s International German heavyweight championship became automatically vacant, but manager Schroeder says “It could still go ahead for some kind of title, but if not, we don’t care much. Arena has already seen some very hot prospects topple recently, and we are confident, Willi can firmly re-establish himself among Europe’s best by upsetting Kretschmann.”

Photo by Marianne Müller: Graciano Rocchigiani (l.) must this time train Hersisia without brother Ralf (r.).

Team Sauerland surprised by Palle´s reaction after Kessler-Haussler purse bid

It was not without surprise that Team Sauerland found out about Mogens Palle´s latest comments in the media. The Danish promoter had voiced his delight about not winning the purse bid for Mikkel Kessler´s WBA super middleweight title fight against top-ranked German challenger Danilo Haussler, stating the bout could “hurt the sport of boxing” in Denmark.

“If it was such an unspectacular fight, why would Mogens travel all the way from Copenhagen to Panama to join the purse bid?” Sauerland managing director Chris Meyer said. “He should be a fair loser and accept the
result. He should also honour the WBA´s ratings where Danilo Haussler is the number one.

”Team Sauerland won yesterday´s purse bid, and Meyer revealed the fight will either be staged in Denmark or Germany. “We still have unfinished business with Mikkel Kessler after he defeated Markus Beyer in October
2006. Now is the time for Haussler to settle the score. We are very proud to promote this special fight,” he added.

Ny chefstränare i Narva BK, Stockholm

BOXNING.

Danny Williams knows he is just one punch away from a world heavyweight title fight against WBC champion Samuel Peter. To reach his dream, the south Londoner has to come through a British heavyweight title defence against John McDermott at Dagenham, England's Goresbrook Leisure Centre on Friday night.

Williams, 39-6 (31), has often been accused of lacking motivation, but promised he’s in the sort of form that destroyed Mike Tyson almost four years ago.Danny, 35, said: “This is the news that I have always wanted to hear. I know I can join the elite of the heavyweight division. This fight is all the motivation I needed.”

Local favourite McDermott, 25-3 (16), froze in his sole British title challenge, against Matt Skelton in December 2005, but has vowed to produce a white hot performance against the defending champion and steal Williams' glory on Friday night.“This is the fittest I have ever been,” promised McDermott.

The 28-year-old added: ”For the last 12 weeks I have been running, sparring and exercising and there is no way that I will quit.
